Francisco J. Varela

Francisco J. Varela (1946-2001) was a Chilean biologist, philosopher, neuroscientist, and cognitive scientist renowned for co-developing the theory of autopoiesis with Humberto Maturana and introducing enactive cognition, emphasizing embodied mind and structural coupling between organisms and environments. He integrated biological research with contemplative traditions, particularly Buddhism, co-founding the Mind and Life Institute to foster dialogue between science and contemplative practices. Varela also advanced neurophenomenology, exploring consciousness through experimental and phenomenological methods.
