Francis Downes Ommanney
Francis Downes Ommanney (1903-1980) was a British writer and marine biologist known for his evocative accounts of whaling and colonial life. Educated at Imperial College and earning a PhD from London University, he worked as a zoologist with the Discovery Investigations in South Georgia and later in Zanzibar and Hong Kong. His notable books include 'South Latitude' (1938) on whaling stations and 'Isle of Cloves' (1956) on Zanzibar.
