Felix Oinas

Felix J. Oinas was an Estonian-American scholar born in Tartu, Estonia, who specialized in Slavic and Finno-Ugric linguistics, folklore, and mythology. He taught at the University of Budapest and Baltic University before emigrating to the United States in 1949, where he joined Indiana University, becoming Professor Emeritus in 1981 after earning his Ph.D. there in 1952. Oinas authored and edited numerous works on Estonian language, Russian folklore, and epic traditions until his death in 2004.
