European Commission
The European Commission is the executive branch of the European Union, established in 1958 as the successor to the High Authority of the European Coal and Steel Community from 1951. It proposes and enforces EU legislation, implements policies and the EU budget, and represents the EU's general interest independently of member states. Led by a College of 27 Commissioners—one from each EU country—and currently presided over by Ursula von der Leyen since 2019.
