Ernest J. Simmons
Ernest J. Simmons (1903–1972) was an American scholar, writer, and educator who helped establish Russian Area Studies in the United States. He taught at Cornell, Harvard, and Columbia, where he served as Professor of Russian Literature and chaired the Department of Slavic Languages, and he is best known for his biographies of Pushkin, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, and Chekhov.
