Ernest Gowers

Sir Ernest Arthur Gowers (1880–1966) was a British civil servant and author best remembered for his book *Plain Words*, first published in 1948, and his revision of Fowler's *Modern English Usage*. He championed clarity, precision, and directness in expository writing, especially within official prose, and became a household name after the international success of *Plain Words*.
