Edgar Lee Masters
Edgar Lee Masters (1868-1950) was an American poet, biographer, dramatist, novelist, and attorney best known for his groundbreaking work Spoon River Anthology (1915), a collection of free-verse epitaphs revealing the hidden lives of small-town residents.[1][2] Born in Garnett, Kansas, he grew up in Illinois towns like Lewistown and Petersburg, practiced law in Chicago partnering with Clarence Darrow, and later moved to New York to focus on writing over 40 books.[3][5] Despite early success, his later works received less acclaim, and he faced personal and health challenges until his death in Philadelphia.[4][5]
