Earl of Chesterfield, Philip Dormer Stanhope
Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield (1694–1773), was a distinguished British statesman, diplomat, and witty man of letters known for his influential works on courtly manners and social etiquette. He is best remembered for his posthumously published 'Letters to His Son,' a guide to the art of pleasing and worldly success written for his illegitimate son. As Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and Secretary of State, he played a significant role in 18th-century British politics while maintaining a reputation as a leading intellectual of his era.
