David Guterson
David Guterson, born May 4, 1956, in Seattle, Washington, is an American novelist, short story writer, poet, journalist, and essayist best known for his bestselling novel Snow Falling on Cedars (1994), which won the PEN/Faulkner Award and has sold nearly four million copies.[1][5] He earned a BA and MFA from the University of Washington, taught high school English on Bainbridge Island, and has authored subsequent novels including East of the Mountains (1999), Our Lady of the Forest (2003), The Other (2008), Ed King (2011), and Evelyn in Transit.[1][7] Guterson is also recognized for his short story collection The Country Ahead of Us, The Country Behind (1989) and nonfiction work Family Matters: Why Homeschooling Makes Sense (1992).[5][7]
