David Ferry

David Russell Ferry (1924–2023) was an acclaimed American poet, translator, and educator, best known for his fluent translations of classical works like Horace's Odes and Virgil's Aeneid, as well as his original poetry collections. He taught at Wellesley College as the Sophie Chantal Hart Professor of English, Emeritus, and received numerous honors including the National Book Award for Poetry for Bewilderment (2012) and the Ruth B. Lilly Poetry Prize. Born in Orange, New Jersey, he served in the Air Force and studied at Amherst College and Harvard University.
