Dan Quillen

Daniel Gray 'Dan' Quillen was an American mathematician renowned as the prime architect of higher algebraic K-theory, for which he received the Cole Prize in 1975 and the Fields Medal in 1978. He held professorships at MIT and later at Oxford University, where he served as the Waynflete Professor of Pure Mathematics from 1984 until his death. Quillen's groundbreaking contributions shaped modern mathematics, particularly in algebraic topology and differential geometry.
