Cynthia Rylant
Cynthia Rylant (née Smith), born June 6, 1954, in Hopewell, Virginia, is an acclaimed American author and librarian who has written over 100 children's books, including picture books, novels, nonfiction, and poetry, often drawing from her Appalachian childhood.[1][2][5] She gained prominence with her debut *When I Was Young in the Mountains* (1982), a Caldecott Honor Book, and won the Newbery Medal for *Missing May* (1993) and a Newbery Honor for *A Fine White Dust* (1987).[1][2]
