Cynthia D. Miller

Cynthia Miller-Idriss is a sociologist and professor in the School of Public Affairs and Baker School of Education at American University, where she serves as the founding director of the Polarization and Extremism Research and Innovation Lab (PERIL). She holds a PhD in Sociology, MPP in Public Policy, and MA in Sociology from the University of Michigan, and an AB in Sociology and German Area Studies from Cornell University. Author of books including 'Man Up: The New Misogyny and the Rise of Violent Extremism' (2025), 'Hate in the Homeland' (2022), and 'The Extreme Gone Mainstream' (2018), she is an MSNBC columnist who testifies before Congress and briefs agencies on extremism prevention.
