Clive Emsley

Clive Emsley (1944-2020) was a pioneering historian and Emeritus Professor at The Open University who defined the field of criminal justice history. He founded the Centre for the History of Crime, Policing and Justice and authored influential works including 'The English Police: A Political and Social History' (1991) and 'Crime and Society in England, 1750-1900'. He established the International Association for the History of Crime and Criminal Justice in 1995 and co-founded the journal 'Crime, History & Societies' in 1997.
