Clint Smith

Clint Smith is an American writer, poet, and scholar born and raised in New Orleans, best known as the #1 New York Times bestselling author of *How the Word Is Passed: A Reckoning With the History of Slavery Across America*, which won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction and other major prizes. He is also the author of poetry collections *Counting Descent* (2016) and *Above Ground* (2023), and works as a staff writer at *The Atlantic*. Smith holds a B.A. in English from Davidson College and a Ph.D. in Education from Harvard University, and currently lives in Maryland with his family.[1][2][3]
