Charles Whittlesey

Charles W. Whittlesey (1808-1886) was a prominent geologist, archaeologist, historian, soldier, and author who conducted early surveys of Ohio's rocks and minerals in the 1830s and studied prehistoric earthworks, authoring around 200 books and articles on history, geology, and archaeology. Born in Southington, Connecticut, he moved to Tallmadge, Ohio as a child, graduated from West Point in 1831, served in the Black Hawk War and Civil War, edited newspapers in Cleveland, and later helped found the Western Reserve Historical Society.
