Charles Stuart Calverley
Charles Stuart Calverley (1831-1884) was an English poet and wit, renowned for his light verse, parodies of Victorian poets, and skilled translations from classical languages. Born Charles Stuart Blayds in Martley, Worcestershire, he excelled academically at Harrow, Oxford, and Cambridge, winning prizes for Latin verse at both universities, and published key works like Verses and Translations (1862) and Fly Leaves (1872). A fall on ice in 1866 left him an invalid, curtailing his promising career in law and literature.
