Charles Hutton
Charles Hutton (1737–1823) was an English mathematician and surveyor, born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne as the youngest son of a colliery labourer.[1][2][3] He worked briefly in a coal pit before becoming a schoolmaster and later professor of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich from 1773 to 1807.[1][2] Hutton is renowned for calculating the Earth's density from the Schiehallion experiment and pioneering contour lines on maps.[1][6]
