Robert Jackson was born in 1941 in Melsonby, North Yorkshire, England. A former RAFVR pilot and navigation instructor, he later became a full-time aviation and aerospace writer, lecturing extensively on strategic issues and authoring more than forty nonfiction books as well as the Yeoman and SAS fiction series.
