Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates are a married couple and the co-creators of the popular Head First book series on programming and technical topics, published by O'Reilly, starting with Head First Java in 2003.[1][2][3][5] Kathy Sierra is an American programming instructor, game developer, and former master trainer for Sun Microsystems who founded JavaRanch in 1998, while Bert Bates has over 25 years in software development with a background in artificial intelligence.[2][3][4] They live in Boulder, Colorado.[4]
