Bert Bates and Kathy Sierra are a married team of programming instructors and authors who co-created the Head First book series, published by O'Reilly Media, beginning with Head First Java in 2003.[1][5] Sierra is a game developer and former master trainer for Sun Microsystems who developed Java certification exams, while Bates has over 25 years of software development experience including work in artificial intelligence.[2][3] Together, they revolutionized technical education through their visually intensive, puzzle-filled approach to instructional books that has expanded beyond programming to cover science, mathematics, and business topics.[5]
