Brian F. Atwater

Brian Franklin Atwater is a geologist born September 18, 1951, who works as a Scientist Emeritus with the U.S. Geological Survey and an Affiliate Professor at the University of Washington. He is renowned for using coastal geology to identify and quantify earthquake and tsunami hazards, particularly in the Pacific Northwest, with his research extending to Alaska, Chile, Japan, and other regions. Atwater has received numerous honors, including the 2016 Benjamin Franklin Medal and the 2023 Marcus Milling Legendary Geoscientist Medal.
