Betsy Ross

Elizabeth Griscom Ross, known as Betsy Ross, was an American upholsterer born in Philadelphia who became legendary for allegedly sewing the first U.S. flag at George Washington's request, though historical evidence is lacking.[1][2] She apprenticed in upholstery, eloped with John Ross in 1773, and after his death in 1776, continued the business, making flags for the Pennsylvania Navy and U.S. government for over 50 years.[1][2][5] Ross married twice more, to Joseph Ashburn and John Claypoole, and remained active in flag-making until her death in 1836.[1][2]
