Beryl Bainbridge
Dame Beryl Bainbridge (1932–2010) was an acclaimed English novelist known for her psychologically astute and often macabre tales of working-class and lower-middle-class life. Born in Liverpool, she grew up in Formby, worked as an actress early in her career, and became one of Britain's most celebrated writers, winning the Whitbread Prize twice and being shortlisted for the Booker Prize five times. Her notable works include The Bottle Factory Outing, An Awfully Big Adventure, and Master Georgie.
