Berry Gordy
Berry Gordy Jr., born November 28, 1929, in Detroit, Michigan, founded Motown Records in 1959 with an $800 family loan, revolutionizing R&B and pop music by developing stars like the Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and the Jackson 5.[1][2] He applied assembly-line principles to music production at Hitsville U.S.A., making Motown the most successful Black-owned record company.[1][5] Gordy later expanded into film production with movies like Lady Sings the Blues and sold Motown in 1988.[3][4]
