Sir Herbert Baker (1862-1946) was a prolific British architect who left an indelible mark on South Africa and the British Empire in the first half of the 20th century. After a Victorian architectural apprenticeship in London, he designed numerous public buildings, churches, schools, and private houses in South Africa, including the Union Buildings, St George’s Cathedral, and Groote Schuur, and later worked in India, Kenya, and England on projects like South Africa House.[1][4][6][8]
