Astley John Hilary 1900-1959 Goodwin

Astley John Hilary Goodwin (1900-1959) was the first professional archaeologist in South Africa, born in Pietermaritzburg, Natal. He studied at St. John’s College in Johannesburg, became professionally trained and appointed in 1923, and later taught the first archaeology course and headed the department at the University of Cape Town. Goodwin developed standard terminology for South African archaeology, founded the South African Archaeological Society, and authored books such as The Stone Age Cultures of South Africa and The Loom of Prehistory.
