Archaeological Survey Of India

The 'Archaeological Survey of India' (ASI) is not a person but an Indian government agency established in 1861 by Alexander Cunningham, a British Army engineer known as the 'Father of Indian Archaeology'. It is responsible for archaeological research, conservation, and preservation of over 3,600 cultural heritage sites and monuments across India, including the Taj Mahal and Ajanta Caves. The ASI operates under the Ministry of Culture and has had 32 Directors-General since its founding.
