Anthony Panizzi

Sir Anthony Panizzi (1797–1879) was an Italian-born revolutionary and scholar who fled political persecution in 1823 and settled in England, where he became a naturalized British citizen in 1832.[1][2] He rose through the ranks at the British Museum Library, serving as Assistant Librarian (1831–1837), Keeper of Printed Books (1837–1856), and Principal Librarian (1856–1866), transforming its cataloging practices with 91 rules that influenced Anglo-American standards.[1][4] Knighted by Queen Victoria in 1869 for his contributions to librarianship, he was also an Italian patriot and later a senator of Italy.[1][5]
