Angela Sutton

Angela C. Sutton is a historian specializing in Atlantic history, currently completing her PhD at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Her research examines how Gold Coast African groups like the Ahanta and Fetu negotiated power in the Atlantic slave trade by exploiting rivalries among European traders, contributing to the decline of mercantilism and the rise of free trade capitalism. She is the author of Pirates of the Slave Trade, a narrative history exploring pirate networks in the transatlantic slave trade, including the pivotal 1722 Battle of Cape Lopez.
