The American Medical Association (AMA) is a professional association and lobbying group for physicians and medical students, founded in 1847 by Dr. Nathan S. Davis following a national medical convention called in 1845. It has shaped U.S. medicine through advancements in scientific standards, medical education, ethics, public health, and publications like the Journal of the American Medical Association launched in 1883 and Current Procedural Terminology in 1966. The AMA maintains the Code of Medical Ethics, Physician Masterfile, and has addressed issues from women's inclusion in 1869 to recognizing obesity as a disease in 2013.
