American Anti-Slavery Society
The American Anti-Slavery Society (AASS) was a pivotal abolitionist organization in the United States, founded in December 1833 in Philadelphia to advocate for the immediate and uncompensated end of slavery. Led by prominent figures such as William Lloyd Garrison and Arthur Tappan, the society grew to include hundreds of local chapters and over 250,000 members by the late 1830s. It dissolved in 1870, five years after the 13th Amendment abolished slavery, having achieved its primary goal.
