Allen Say
Allen Say, born James Allen Koichi Moriwaki Seii in Yokohama, Japan, in 1937 to a Japanese American mother and Korean father, apprenticed with cartoonist Noro Shinpei as a child and later moved to the United States at age sixteen.[1][2] He worked as a commercial photographer before becoming a renowned children's book author and illustrator, best known for Grandfather's Journey, which won the 1994 Caldecott Medal.[1][3] Many of his works draw from autobiographical experiences, exploring Japanese and Japanese American themes, and he resides in Portland, Oregon.[2][3]
