Albert M. Craig

Albert Morton Craig (1927–2021) was an American historian specializing in Japanese history, serving as Harvard-Yenching Professor of History Emeritus at Harvard University where he taught from 1959 until retirement.[1][2] Born in Chicago, he graduated from Northwestern University in 1949, earned his PhD at Harvard, and authored influential works like 'Chōshū in the Meiji Restoration,' transforming understanding of Japan's modernization.[4][1] He directed the Harvard-Yenching Institute from 1976 to 1986 and mentored generations of East Asian historians.[3][4]
