Alan Bowness

Sir Alan Bowness (1928–2021) was a British art historian, curator, critic, and museum director who significantly shaped the contemporary art world. He served as Director of the Tate Gallery from 1980 to 1988, overseeing the establishment of Tate Liverpool, and later as founding Director of the Henry Moore Foundation and Institute from 1988 to 1994. Author of books including Modern European Art and Recent British Painting, he was a passionate advocate for 19th- and 20th-century painting and sculpture.
