A R Gurney

A. R. Gurney was an American playwright, novelist, and teacher best known for witty dramas about upper-class WASP life in contemporary America, including The Dining Room, The Cocktail Hour, and Love Letters. Born in Buffalo, New York, he taught at MIT for many years before devoting himself full time to writing for the theater.
