From birth and childhood onwards, through sibling rivalry, love, ambition, loss, war, migration, endeavour, vanity, rejection, tragedy, travel, romance, civil unrest, innovation, idealism, racial issues, humour, cultural controversies, language differences, disputes over inheritance, divorce, fostering, step-families, introversion and existentialism, the characters search for ways to live, even to succeed. They must deal with the quickly changing circumstances of their time. Most significantly they must survive and surmount the indecipherable enigma that is South Africa.
