For Jason Marlez, the summer is not a good time of year. He misses his friends and his home so much. As he is making ready for his second year at Zorengard School of Magic, Jason receives an unexpected warning that a terrible threat will await him and his friends if they return to Zorengard that year, but Jason, missing his home and friends too much, ignores the warning and makes ready for his second year. When Jason and his friends, Emily Lorman and David Hamilton, return to Zorengard for their second year, they learn of an old threat to the school known as The Cave of Mysteries. There is a monster loose inside the castle that is paralyzing students into statues. Will this be the end of Zorengard? Who could be the one behind the attacks? Could it be Vincent Mavroc, Jason's worse enemy? Or could the culprit be the doing of the Fallen Dark Lord, Cordor, who wanted Jason killed as a baby? Jason also discovered that's he's a Dyrant, a wizard who can speak the Dyrus Language, which is an ability for some Dark Wizards? Could Jason be a Dark Wizard like Frolos Zorengard, the one who created The Cave of Mysteries? Despite this horrifying turn of events, Jason is comforted when he befriends a phoenix named Torgon which, to his surprise, once belong to Jason's father, Richard Marlez. As the attacks get worse, Zorengard may have to close down forever. Can Jason and his friends put a stop to this terrible crisis?
