Fleeing charges of witchcraft, young Otter and her Sami grandmother Sunna are forced to leave their home in Nordmark, Sweden in spring 1653. By chance they meet up in Gothenburg, Sweden with Otter's older half-brother Elof, who is running away from his own personal tragedy. The three of them soon set sail for the small Swedish volony located on the South River in the New World. Sunna is hoping to find her husband Tero, who was deported there many years before, Elof wants to forget the past and begin again and Otter would like to escape to a new world and a new life. The author Susan Deborah Kaufmann-Guyer wrote this book whilst facing her own challenges in life, the battle against cancer and all that comes with it. She was able to finish telling the story of Otter and Elof on her deathbed. We are so grateful for the wonderful gift she has left us with this novel and miss her dearly. Her novel will be published in a series of two, Journey to a new world being the first one.
