West Michigan Auto Racing 1903 to the Present Vol.I

The author of this book has spent 69 years involved with auto racing in West Michigan. He is the founder of the Michigan Motor Sports Hall of Fame and the founder of the Berlin Raceway Hall of Fame. Volume I of this six book series covers the beginning of auto racing in West Michigan at the West Michigan Fairgrounds where the open wheel cars of that time competed from 1903 to 1935. Bigelow Field raced midgets from 1938 until 1952. Kamp's Speedway raced midgets from 1940 to 1942. Grand Haven River Road Track raced jalopies from 1946 to 1948. Delaney Speedway raced stock cars for two years, 1946 -1947. Whiskey Ridge Raceway ran jalopies and stock cars from 1946 to 1979. Nunica Speedway raced midgets and stock cars from 1947 to 1952. Marne Speedway raced jalopies in 1947 and 1948. The Grand Rapids Speedrome raced stock cars from 1950 to 1966. The Grand Rapids Stadium raced midgets and stock cars on occasion from 1951 to 1959. Berlin Raceway began racing in 1951 and is still racing. Stock cars and modified stock cars raced from 1951 to 1957 on their fifth-mile dirt track The track switched to supermodifieds on their dirt half-mile track from 1958 to 1965. Berlin refigured and paved their track racing supermodifieds on pavement from 1966 to 1968. Semi-late model stock cars raced till 1969 then the late model stock cars began racing up to the present.
