Heart of Darkness is a novella published in 1899. It was inspired by a journey Conrad made in the Congo River serving as ship captain for a Belgian trading company. Central to Conrad's work is the idea that there is little difference between "civilised people" and "savages."The story is told by Charles Marlow, a sailor who became captain of a river steamboat for an ivory trading company. The main character is Kurtz, an ivory trading who command a trading post and lives as a demigod among native Africans. Marlow will be witness to Kurtz's final moments.
