In 1962 the Wind of Change is blowing over East Africa. Harry Paine is at his father's old school in North Yorkshire, having recently arrived from Kenya. He is called from the cricket field to the headmaster's house. His grandfather's Bentley is parked in the drive. Immediately his mind turns to the "Mao Mao". He discovers that his parents and sister appear to have been involved in a car accident but the car has not been found. This remains a mystery until he returns to Africa, having qualified as an agriculturalist and won a contract in the East African state of Bandari.. The mystery is not solved until he goes to Malta and finds himself a legatee of a man he has never met.
