This publication is intended at an update to the March 1984 "Consumer Price Indices - Sources and Methods". It includes four parts. The first part relates the the general concept of a Consumer Price Index and considers topics such as the definitions employed, the concepts of consumption expenditures, the fixed basket, prices covered, the reference population, the source of expenditure weights, price collection procedures, the calculation of the index, the treatment of seasonal items, and quality changes. The second part summarizes briefly some of the main characteristics of consumer prices. The third part gives a brief description of the consumer price index of each OECD Member country. And the fourth part describes the OECD methodology for the aggregation of individual country data into zone totals. The book provides complete text in both English and French.
