1993年，艾爾米塔什博物館出版了英文版Lost Empire of the Silk road-Buddhist art from Khara Khoto(X-XIII Centry) 。1996年，台灣歷史博物館又出了中文版《絲路上消失的王國：西夏黑水城的佛教藝術》，對俄藏11 - 13世紀的西夏藝術品進行了介紹。1908年3月,俄羅斯人科茲洛夫率領一支探險隊，在賄賂了蒙古巴登扎沙克王爺和土爾扈特貝勒爺後，終於在蒙古腹地的一片荒漠之中，發現了西夏名城 - 黑水城。9天的瘋狂挖拋後，40匹駱駝從這裏運走了2.4萬卷文書和537件價值連城的唐卡珍品。貪婪的探險者還發現了一具坐姿女性骨架，並千方百計把她運回了聖彼得堡。
