After college, he joined Stax Records in Memphis, later becoming president of the music publishing division, East/Memphis Music Corp. Whitsett was named general manager of Chrysalis Music (London) in 1976. Chappell Music Ltd. (London) recruited him in 1981 as manager, Standard Division. Whitsett has operated advisory services to music publishers in 15 countries since the mid-eighties. His clientele has included CBS, MCA, RCA, EMI, Chappell, Chrysalis, Island, Virgin, Rondor, Jobete, United Artists, and publishing companies owned by Elton John, Michael Jackson, and Paul McCartney. Now based in his hometown, Jackson, Mississippi, Whitsett is associated with Malaco Music Group and frequently provides consultancy services to music publishers and copyright investors worldwide.
