From 1st "The publication of this volume is intended to make some of John Thornburg's hymn texts available to worship leaders, church musicians, and tune writers. Due to his long and fruitful collaboration with Jane Marshall, many of these texts have been set to tunes by Marshall in her hymnary, 'What Gift Can We Bring?', also published by Wayne Leupold Editions, Inc. However, it is our hope that other composers will also fashion many new melodies to carry these words." From Page "John Thornburg is a fourth-generation United Methodist minister with music in his blood. His grandfather, Amos was a singer on the Chautauqua circuit and served on the committee that edited the 1966 Methodist hymnal. After serving 22 years in parish ministry in the North Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church, John is now engaged in a ministry devoted to strengthening congregational singing and putting an end to local church 'worship wars'. He leads congregational hymn festivals, consults with local church staffs, and resources lay worship committees. His hymn texts have appeared in seven hymnals and he has collaborated with such composers as Jane Marshall, Bruce Neswick, Craig Philips, Amanda Husberg, Joel Martinson, and Gerre Hancock to produce over 100 choral anthems, extended choral works, hymns, choruses, and vocal solos. He was one of the founding directors of The Opera Project, a Texas-based arts organization set up to produce faith-themed opera."
