The book makes available as much information as possible about 700 surnames in Ireland. Such information includes original Gaelic form (where applicable) ; meaning; English variants; identification of septs, or branches who bore such surname (where applicable) ; territory of origin; position of surname amongst most numerous in Ireland, England and Wales, Scotland, and United States; counties in which principally found in Ireland; and estimated number of bearers in Ireland and United States. All surnames in Ireland (which would easily exceed four thousand) are not included in this work, and neither are all Irish surnames properly so called. It was necessary to decide on what basis surnames should be included. The criterion was that a Any surname that had approximately 1,000 bearers in 1890 was included. In addition the most numerous surnames in each of the counties at that time are also included. These criteria subject to very few exceptions (surnames borne by my own ancestors) dictated
