Criminal investigator Larry Macklin is still in the doghouse with his father, the sheriff, after his impulsive and dangerous mission to rescue a colleague's kidnapped wife. His promotion to sergeant is in doubt and he's afraid he'll be on Mauser-sitting duties for the rest of his life.. But he soon has bigger problems when a childhood friend is found passed out near the dead body of a retired sheriff's deputy.
