Mid-forties and both getting over the disappointment of yet another failed relationship, Marco and Valentina meet by chance in a clothes shop. Set in Seville, the story traces their struggles to put the past behind them, their slow steps towards a budding romance and sensual love story, before it all implodes with Mediterranean passion. In search of a way back, both need courage to face their own demons and fears if they are to find themselves, and each other. The elegant streets and squares, the monuments and quiet corners of historic, perfumed Seville are the colourful backdrop throughout the changing seasons. We see the city from the inside, with sharp observation of local life, its bustling energy, idiosyncratic people, and the spirit at the heart of this singular town. The action moves to Corsica and Florence during the summer before returning for a breathless finale back in Seville.Valentina's feisty personality is offset by pragmatic best friend Rosaria's advice and empathy, while Marco's counterpart Tony's lascivious womanising provides a raunchy, often hilarious contrast to Marco's chivalrous steadiness. The rich cast of minor characters includes a wide-boy Italian matchmaker, the tour guide who invents history, a plain-talking 15-stone naked neighbour, the motormouth who interrupts even herself, the nympho twins with the eye-opening tattoes, the mystical masseur next door, and the old flame which is very much still burning. Oh, and Ray Winstone, who hijacks a fairy story. Music is almost like another character in the tale, from Stile Antico to Steely Dan, Simon & Garfunkel to Supertramp, Clannad to the Kinks, it reflects the feelings and sensibilities of our protagonists, who often break out in spontaneous, heartfelt song. With lively comment and discussion about renaissance polyphony, Ennio Morricone, Runrig and Vangelis, among many, music brings depth, joy, and solace. More than just a tale of love, themes such as the sliding floor of friendships, local traditions, infidelity, the funny side of sex, trusting instincts, and cultural identity are woven into the narrative. Humour is ever-present, a counterpoint to the weightier themes of love, forgiveness and redemption, often in pacey, incisive dialogue. The style is warm throughout, and, at times, achingly romantic, fast-paced, psychologically analytical or surreally off-centre. Varied moments include the hell of moving house, the adrenalin buzz and life lessons of road cycling, dates which go spectacularly wrong, unexpected, unbridled passion, chance meetings and change, meditation, exam invigilation blues, and the reincarnation of Bob Marley. Marco and Valentina's emotional journey delves deep into the subconscious, like the highwayman waiting to ambush the conscious mind. Their inner conflicts are never far from the surface as deep, romantic love upsets the very trust they work so hard to build, yet pushes them to confront jealousy, mistrust and anger.
