Each verso contains a couple of paragraphs that describe the historical event in question, while the recto features primary sources that complement the main text. The primary sources consist of photos of and excerpts from diaries, letters, drawings, paintings, maps, and even photographs of clothes and buildings. "Source Explore" sidebars explain the importance of the images. "As They Saw It" sidebars contain apt and dramatic quotes from people of the period, adding immediacy. Students will get a much richer sense of the famine at Valley Forge from the well-chosen quotes ("A general cry thro' the Camp this Evening among the Soldiers, 'No Meat! No Meat!'").
